CREWS CONTINUE TO WORK HARD TO LOWER ISO RATING FOR DISTRICT RESIDENTS

All members of the Rolla Rural Fire Protection District are currently working diligently to prepare for the upcoming ISO
testing, in hopes of lowering the current classification.  By lowering the rating, home and business owners can expect
to see a decrease in insurance premiums for their fire protection, depending on what insurance company the property
is insured with.

The ISO testing is a very detailed inspection type process that issues a rating that insurance companies look at to
determine costs.  The ratings given are based on a scale of 1-10, with 1 being the best and 10 the lowest.

Areas that are tested include hoses, pumps, equipment, training records, communications, water supply, staffing, etc.

District Purchases New Thermal Imaging Camera

Rolla Rural Fire put a new Scott Eagle 320 thermal imager into service on November 30. Fire Chief Bruce Southard
assisted in raising funds for the device by speaking with local businesses and organizations and requesting
donations. The imager will increase both firefighter and civilian safety by allowing firefighters to search for victims in
structure fires more rapidly. The imager also assists crew locate hidden or residual fires, or other heat sources. It will
be of great benefit to citizens of the district. Shortly after its delivery, firefighters implemented the imager during a
structure fire and found it to be a very useful piece of equipment.
AUGUST 31, 2008 - NEW STATION ONE DEDICATED

On Sunday August 31, 2008, members of Rolla Rural Fire were joined by the public to officially dedicate the building

National Fire Prevention Week 2009-October 4-10

The men and women of the RRFD will participate in several events during this year's annual fire prevention week.
The goal of the program is to educate the general public on fire safety, in order to create a safer community.
Special emphasis is put into education and outreach programs with local school children. The RRFD will visit
several local schools during the week. We would also like to invite you to visit the department's open house, on
Saturday Oct. 10th, at Station 1. The annual open house gives the community a unique opportunity to meet the
firefighters, tour the station, view apparatus, ask questions, and observe a vehicle extrication demonstration.

Crews Train Relentlessly, Despite Unfavorable Weather

Firefighters of the Rolla Rural Fire Department continue to train, despite cold and wet conditions of the impending
winter. Thorough, adequate training improves the department's effectiveness on fire scenes. It also develops
necessary skills such as team work and communication. Training gives firefighters the benefit of first hand
experience and knowledge. You will often see the department at the Fire Training Grounds on Lions Club Drive.
Firefighter of the Month
Firefighter Katie Schlichting joined the department in October of 2008.
Katie is a student at MS&T majoring in Mechanical Engineering and will
graduate in May of 2010.  Katie has already earned the rank of Firefighter.
During time away from studies and the department, she enjoys sports,
reading, hackey sack, video games and being outdoors.  Katie is 21 and
her favorite call type is natural cover fires.
District Purchases New Midwest 3000 Gallon Tanker
The Rolla Rural Fire Protection District purchased a new Midwest
Fire Apparatus tanker. The truck features a 3000 gallon elliptical
tank, 3500 gallon folding dump tank, a 750 gallon per minute pump,
and one SCBA. The new truck, number 4425, is the fourth run truck
on structure fires and wildland fires. It also serves as the mutual aid
tanker. With the addition of 4425, Station One can now supply 8300
gallons of water to a structure fire scene. Accompanied by the
tankers at Station Three, a total of 12300 gallons of water can
arrive on a scene on the first run.
